United Nations Association of Iran (UNA-IRAN)

Background

Recognizing that human rights and respect for human dignity are among humanity’s most fundamental aspirations, and that their realization requires sustained national and international commitment as well as close cooperation with the United Nations and other humanitarian mechanisms, the United Nations Association of Iran (UNA-Iran) commenced its activities in 1998.

Established as an official national body within the framework of the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA), UNA-Iran is, in accordance with the Federation’s Statutes, the sole official representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran within the global network of United Nations Associations.

United Nations support for the activities of the Federation and its national associations, first formally recognized in General Assembly resolution 41/68 (1986), has consolidated the unique role of this network in advancing multilateral cooperation and enhancing public awareness of the purposes and principles of the United Nations. Drawing upon this support, and relying on the expertise of academics, civil society actors, and specialists in the fields of human rights, development, and international relations, UNA-Iran plays an active role in promoting dialogue, facilitating knowledge exchange, and strengthening national capacities.
