UN Secretary-General “Deeply Shocked,” Amnesty International Calls for Urgent Investigation
Multiple international organizations have issued statements condemning the US military strike on a wedding celebration in Iran’s Hormozgan Province. UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed being “deeply shocked” by the civilian casualties, while Amnesty International called for an urgent, independent, and impartial investigation.
According to UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric at a press briefing, Guterres is “deeply concerned” about the renewed exchange of fire between the US and Iran and “deeply shocked” by reports of civilian casualties, including the alleged airstrike on a wedding in Iran. The Secretary-General “condemns all attacks on civilians” and reiterated that all parties must comply with their obligations under international humanitarian law, including the principles of distinction, proportionality, and precaution. Guterres also warned that the current escalation of tensions would have “devastating consequences” for the region and humanitarian operations as a whole.
Amnesty International, in a statement dated September 8, 2026, called for an urgent, independent, and impartial investigation into the US and Israeli strikes on civilians in Iran. The statement specifically referenced the September 1 US strike on a wedding in Hormozgan Province, noting that “there are credible reports that a US airstrike hit a home where a wedding was taking place.” Amnesty International Secretary-General Agnès Callamard said that the recent escalation of the US-Iran conflict — including “the deadly US strike on a wedding celebration in Hormozgan Province that caused civilian casualties” — demonstrates that the risks facing civilians in the region remain extremely high. The organization stressed that indiscriminate attacks that may constitute war crimes must be held accountable and compensation provided.
Iran had previously characterized the attack as a “war crime.” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on social media that “the truth of this illegal and selective war, and the true face of war crimes, is in Sirik.” Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations also emphasized in a letter to the UN Secretary-General and the Security Council president that deliberately targeting civilians, including children, constitutes a serious violation of the fundamental rules of international humanitarian law and amounts to a war crime.
According to Iranian authorities, the attack occurred on the night of September 1 in the Kuhestak area of Sirik County, Hormozgan Province, hitting a residential home where a wedding ceremony was underway. At least four civilians were killed, including a four-year-old child, and more than 50 others were wounded.
