Since the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy has framed the current work of the UN to support and show solidarity to victims of terrorism and their families, UN Information Center (UNIC)-Tehran decided to mark jointly with the Association for Defending Victims of Terrorism (ADVT), the World Day of Social Justice (20 February).
More than 25 civil society activists from ADVT took part in the round table discussion at the UN building on 16 February 2017.
During the programme, the participants were briefed about retrieving the UN-related information and documentation through the UN website. After introducing UNIC bilingual website, with a focus on translations of the UN conventions on terrorism, UNIC Reference Assistant Ms. Nazanin Ghaemmaghami elaborated on work of the Security Council and some of its resolutions on threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist act.
She also highlighted Iranian efforts in this area, namely General Assembly’s resolution, “A World Against Violence and Violent Extremism”, proposed by the Islamic Republic of Iran. She spoke about UN action to counter terrorism and the key related documents as well as UNODC Terrorism Prevention Branch.
ADVT as a non-governmental organization, has consultative status with Economic and Social Council. Its members are the families and children of victims of terrorism, who use NGO as a forum to share their experiences and issues.
