Efforts to promote human rights is one of the main objectives that the UN and its agencies pursue, and these efforts will not come to anything without working to raise public awareness and information on its objectives, activities and programmes. UNA-IRAN which has included the establishment of links with the UN, the international community, and the people, and also to promote UN culture in the definition of its objectives, has worked towards awareness building. To this aim following a series of talks between UNA-IRAN, and Mr. Moghadam from UNIC in Tehran, the UN System and Its Activities in Iran Education Course for Education Department Teachers and School Heads was held.

The main objective in holding this course was for the participants to have a broad perspective of the theoretical and practical aspects of the UN System and its agencies, its objectives, activities, achievements, and its capacities within the Islamic Republic of Iran, particularly regarding the realisation of the MDGs.

The course was held between 13 and 23 August, in 36 hours of class time, with 140 teachers and school heads in attendance. The following cooperated in holding the course: United Nations Information Centre (UNIC), World Health Organization (WHO), World Food Programme (WFO), United Nations Office on Drug and Crime (UNODC), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), International Organization for Migration (IOM), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), UNAIDS, UNICEF, United Nations Resident Coordinator, and UNDP. Representatives from all the aforementioned each gave talks on the activities of their particular organization or agency to the participants. The quality and effectiveness of the course was highly rated by the participants, so much so that suggestions were made that the course be repeated on a broader level and a more specific audience.
