PEACE DAY 2008 in IRAN
October 20, 2008

WHAT ARE YOU DOING FOR PEACE?

In 2001, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution establishing an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence on 21 September. International Peace Day is a chance for the world to come together and gain commitment from our families, friends and communities for peace. Since Peace Day coincided this year with Iran's Commemoration of the Martyrdom of Imam Ali, the UNAMA Office in Iran has decided to hold this event in October in the Melal Cultural Center (Sunday 26 October, 8 am - 3 pm) and the Khavaran Cultural Center (18-21 October, 9 am - 7 pm) in Tehran.  Peace cartoons designed by the Afghan artists Ali Zada, Samedi and Sargardan as well as peace posters by UNAMA, UNICEF, WFP, and UNHCR will be exhibited at these venues.

In 2007 over 100 million people were active on Peace Day in 192 countries. There were life-saving initiatives in 14 countries and over 80 activities in Afghanistan alone where 1.4 million children were vaccinated against polio.
