About Us

With attention to human rights, the respect to human dignity, being one of the most important objectives of mankind in the past and present, and in view of the fact that the preservation of all achievements need a national and international will and close cooperation alongside the United Nations.

The United Nations Association of Iran (UNA-IRAN) came about as a result of a popular movement for the United Nations. The support for the United Nations and its development activities towards the promotion of human rights, humanitarian standards, spread of culture of tolerance, freedom of religion, freedom of expression, and peace and respect for human dignity, are all principles that are included in the UNA-IRAN agenda. In spite of different views and definitions of human rights, UNA-IRAN shall endeavour to be a bridge between the United Nations and international institutions, and Iran, and shall try to bring human rights standards home.

In 1998, UNA-IRAN officially became a member of the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA). In 1986, the United Nations General Assembly issued resolution 41/68 thus establishing WFUNA, and national UNAs towards the general mobilisation in support of UN programmes and activities. The central office of UNA-IRAN is located in Tehran, and if need be branches in other locations shall be opened.

 Objectives

1 – Efforts to promote human rights, protection of human dignity and political freedoms in the world.

2 – Establishing links with national and international organizations that follow the same objectives as UNA-IRAN, for the purpose of the expansion of UN objectives.

3 – Promotion of understanding, unity and cooperation between men, women and children for the elimination of all forms of discrimination.

4 – Participation for the elimination of obstacles in the way of peace, and cooperation for the establishment justice, security and disarmament.

5 – Efforts to achieve economic and social development for the realisation of a better life.

6 – Research, information provision, and education on the United Nations Charter and the UN system.

This Association shall apply the following methods to reach its goals:

1 – Holding of educational courses for the promotion of human rights culture.

2 – Holding seminars, conferences, lectures and specialist sittings.

3 – Publication of news on cases of human rights violations, in the form of newsletters and educational materials.

4 – Active presence in the international level, exchange of information with other NGOs on all issues concerned.

5 – Foundational research on human rights violations.

6 – Cooperation with the WFUNA.

7 – Cooperation with the United Nations Commission on Human Rights.

8 – Links with national governmental organizations to exchange views on human rights.

9 – Holding of meetings with important governmental and non-governmental institutions.

10 – Links with UNAs from other countries to exchange information and ideas.

11 – Provision of information to authorities to prevent human rights and constitutional violations. By prioritising the abovementioned objectives the UNA-IRAN shall try to take positive steps towards the improvement of human rights. The UNA-IRAN has also successfully become member in various national and international networks and coalition that have similar objectives.
